Is Axe Throwing Safe?

Is Axe Throwing Safe?

Axe throwing in the UK is growing rapidly. Along with our own 2022 expansion, there are multiple new venues springing up all over the nation. We know that axe throwing as a recreational activity is a safe and family friendly way to spend some time, but we understand that some people might be a little sceptical. So, we are here to put your mind at ease, answer a couple of frequently asked questions and tell you a little bit more about the safety features at Axed Global venues.

When you think about other popular activities in the UK such as bowling or darts, you know they are safe to do. You have tried them before and know what to expect. Axe throwing is just as safe as bowling or darts, it’s just about dipping your toe and learning a little bit about how it works, so you too, understand just how safe axe throwing is.

The biggest unknown is that you are being told to throw something that you have always been told to have caution around. You will have been told to not to throw heavy objects before, but do you hesitate when picking up a bowling ball to chuck it down an alley? No! It’s all about having the right setup and being in a safe and regulated environment such as a bowling alley or an axe throwing venue.

Axed Global venues in particular, have a series of features and practices in place that keep you safe and make sure you have an awesome time while you are in our venues.

Axed Global axe throwing lanes are specifically designed with safety in mind. There are three main features that support our bid for safety:

  • Our exclusive end grain target systems reduce bounce back, absorb more shock from the axe and have a higher successful land rate than standard plank targets. The more axes you land, the less you will miss. Learn more about our end grain targets here.
  • Our lanes are caged in, which means there is no risk of any axes outside of the throwing zone, and definitely no risk of throwing your axe backwards into a crowd!
  • Axed Global have singular lanes with secure partitions between each lane. This means you can throw and collect your axes independently from the lane next to you. So, you don’t have to wait for other groups to throw and check it’s safe before collecting your axes from the target.

A huge part of why Axed Global venues are safe axe throwing environments is our trained instructors. We put our instructors through rigorous training to make sure you have experts with you on the lanes. It’s not all about being able to do cool trick shots and land 3 bullseyes in a row. Our instructors are trained to recognise exactly what is wrong with a throw in order to give you personalised coaching while on the lanes. Many of our instructors can recognise from how the axe lands, or even how the axe sounds as it hits the target, what adjustments you need to make in order to land a throw. They are always available throughout your session, keeping an eye on you as you throw, so you know help is on hand if you need it.

Axed Global venues all operate under the same safety rules across the whole brand, so no matter where you are in the UK, if you are with Axed Global you can feel secure that you are in a safe environment. Here are a couple of our in-house rules which you can also find in our FAQs:

Can you drink before you throw axes?

You are NOT allowed to drink any alcohol before you throw axes in an Axed Global venue. If we suspect you have had a drink, we will not allow you to throw. Save the victory drinks for after!

Is there a dress code for axe throwing?

You must wear closed toe shoes that cover your foot. No flip-flops, sandals, or heels in the lane. You need a good grip when you throw axes. Learn more about that here.

How far away from the target do I stand when throwing an axe?

You must throw from behind the 12ft safety line.

How many people can throw at once?

Only one person (and an instructor) is permitted in the throw zone at any time.

Is axe throwing accessible for disabled or impaired people?

Of course! You must be able to see 12ft (it’s ok if it’s with assistance) and have at least one arm capable of throwing/ supporting a 1lb axe. Our lanes are wheelchair friendly, and our instructors are trained to give a little more assistance to those who might need it in the lanes. We do have the overall say if we think it is safe for you to throw or not, so if you have a disability or impairment, please contact the venue directly to talk about your visit before you book.
